Captain Roy Songy Reports Consistent Bites and Limits Across the Gulf Reefs

Port Isabel Channel - Cameron, TX

The offshore fishing scene in Port Isabel is currently delivering excellent results for both meat-haulers and big-game hunters. With stable weather patterns settling over the Gulf, we have been able to reach productive structures consistently, leading to full coolers and satisfied anglers.

Current Conditions and Hot Spots The water clarity has been exceptional lately, particularly once you cross the 20-mile marker. We are seeing a strong push of baitfish moving along the reef edges, which has brought the predatory species in close. Bottom fishing remains the most productive method for those looking for steady action.

Top Producing Species

Red Snapper: The bite is aggressive. We are finding larger "sow" snappers in deeper water (80–120 feet) using heavy tackle and squid or cigar minnows. Limits are being reached on most full-day runs.

Mahi Mahi: We have encountered several weed lines on our recent offshore trips. Trolling small colorful lures or pitching live bait has resulted in some high-energy surface action.

Cobia: Keep an eye on the buoys and structure. We’ve had several "ling" show up curiously near the boat, easily picked up with a well-placed jig.

Inshore Update: For those staying in the bay, the Redfish are schooling up on the flats. Drifting live shrimp under popping corks remains the gold standard for consistent Speckled Trout and Redfish action.

Looking Ahead As we move further into the season, we expect the pelagic bite to intensify. The overnight trips are becoming increasingly popular for those targeting Swordfish and Tuna, as the night bite has been remarkably steady. Whether you are looking for a half-day reef session or a deep-sea marathon, now is the time to get on the water.
