How to Get Your Texas Saltwater License Before Your Charter

Navigating the vibrant waters of the Texas Gulf Coast with Epic Charters Unlimited is an incredible experience, but staying compliant with state regulations is the first step toward a successful outing. In Texas, a valid fishing license is required for any person who takes or attempts to take fish, mussels, clams, or other aquatic life from public waters. Because our trips depart from Port Isabel, you will specifically need a license that includes a Saltwater Endorsement. This endorsement is a mechanical necessity for targeting the Red Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and Sailfish that inhabit our coastal and offshore territories.

Who Needs a License and Who is Exempt

In general, every angler aged 17 and older must possess a current Texas fishing license. This applies to both Texas residents and visitors traveling from out of state or abroad. However, Texas provides several exemptions to encourage the next generation of anglers and support specific groups. You do not need a license if you are under 17 years of age, or if you were a Texas resident born before January 1, 1931. Additionally, residents with certain intellectual disabilities who are fishing as part of medically approved therapy are exempt. For our guests traveling from nearby states, it is important to note that senior residents of Louisiana (65+) and Oklahoma (65+) may also be exempt under specific reciprocal agreements, provided they hold a valid license from their home state.

Saltwater vs. Freshwater Requirements

Since the primary Port Isabel, TX fishing hotspots are located in the Gulf and surrounding bay systems, a Saltwater Fishing Package is the standard requirement for our charters. If you only plan to fish with us in the coastal salt waters, the Saltwater Package is sufficient. However, if your Texas travels also include visiting inland lakes or rivers for bass and catfish, you should opt for the All-Water Fishing Package. This convenient option covers both environments and ensures you are legally prepared for any water body in the state. For short-term visitors, a One-Day All-Water License is also available, which provides a cost-effective way to get on the water without committing to an annual permit.

Pricing and Where to Purchase

Texas resident and non-resident pricing is structured to support local conservation efforts. As of 2026, a Resident Saltwater Package is approximately $35, while Senior Residents (65+) enjoy a reduced rate of $17. For our out-of-state travelers, a Non-resident Saltwater Package is approximately $63. If you prefer the flexibility of the one-day license, it is available for both residents and non-residents for around $11 per day. You can easily purchase your license online through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) website or via the "Outdoor Annual" mobile app. For those who prefer a physical location, licenses are available at numerous retailers in Port Isabel, including local bait and tackle shops and large sporting goods stores. Be sure to have your license (or a digital image of it) ready before you arrive at the dock for your trip with Captain Roy Songy.
